Tips to Overcome Writer’s Block

As a writer, one of the challenges you will likely face, that’s if you are not already experiencing it now, as you strive to meet deadline in submitting your articles or works to your employers or clients is what is generally referred to in the writing world as Writer’s Block.

Writer’s block is a situation where you are just unable to put down words and express your thoughts in your writings. You cannot complete your articles, stories, poem, or other forms of writing work you are engaged in because you cannot put yourself in the right state of mind or mood to produce the quality writings you know you are capable of.

If this situation is allowed to persist, it will not only affect the amount of money you can make as a freelance online writer, it could actually destroy your writing carrier. If you are unable to write and deliver the number of articles you have promised your client, who themselves have their schedule for the use of the articles, you might strain your relationship with them and your job might be on the line.

Aside your freelance online writing job being affected by Writer’s Block, if you are not able to put yourself in writing states, it would certainly affect your ability to finish your book project in time and have it ready for publishers. This could be the sole determining factor while some writers who have developed ways of overcoming Writer’s Block appear to seamlessly be able to roll out tens of published works within a few years while others could barely boast of one or two.

Writer’s Block is a psychological state writers must therefore overcome to be effective and efficient on their job, whether for clients or for themselves.

I will share with you some effective tips you can apply to break Writer’s Block whenever it comes up in the course of completing a writing project. But before we go through them, let’s find out the likely cause of this “Block” in the first place.

For most writers Writer’s Block occurs when they begin to compare the writings they are engaged in with published works of other experienced professional writers or theirs. And what do you think they would see? Their writings would naturally appear as thrash. Then they feel what they are writing is not good enough.

Having identified the possible cause of Writer’s Block, we can now consider some things writers can do to be on top of it whenever it occurs and be effective and efficient on their job.

The first thing, which is very important to note is that if you are on a writing project, don’t compare your draft with already published works. There is no basis for this comparison; before a book or other writings are published they must have gone through several refinements.

Yours is still work in progress. Just continue writing it as the words are flowing. You will read it and refine it later. You will even be surprised that it wasn’t bad after all.

Other suggestions to overcoming Writer’s Block:

Change your state

You have been sitting and writing at a particular place, and then the words are no longer flowing. For several minutes you have not been able to successfully write a paragraph. That’s Writer’s Block! You can break it by changing your state. Take a few minutes walk or change your location.

Vary your work

When Writer’s Block starts setting in, you can stop writing to do other things, such as editing some other works.

Change your writing schedule

Writing at a different time than you used to can help break Writer’s Block.

Take it as a rule to always write something every day, no matter how bad it might appear

This really helps to put you in a writing state always and therefore to be able to complete a lot of articles for your clients if you are hired to write articles, or to complete your book project quickly. In fact, if you are a young writer, it can help you to develop in your writing profession really well.

Don’t start your work by rereading what you had written previously

You can get discouraged by noticing errors or that the work does not sound good enough. Remember this is only a draft, which you will refine later after you had completed the work. Just continue writing.

Certain physical activities can help restore your flow

Physical activities such as dancing, jogging, yoga, swimming, etc, can help you relax your mind and position you for a good writing state.

Listening to music with rhythm

Classical music, such as Vivaldi, and other types of string music are very good at helping writers to get their flow in knitting words together into powerful sentences. Listening to Jazz music is also good for overcoming Writer’s Block.

Those are some suggestions you can apply to help you break Writer’s Block, get back to your writing and complete your work in good time.
