How Freelance Writers in Nigeria can Receive Payment for Their Writing Service Online

Today I will be addressing the big issue of how freelance writers from Nigeria can receive payment for their writing service from their online clients.

First of all I like to say thank you to those of you who have left comments on this blog. Really it is from your comments that I can know which area to shine light on more to be able to realize the mission of setting up the blog – Online Writing Opportunities.com which is to help Nigerian freelance writers to be part of the huge money making opportunity for writers on the Internet.

As you may have found out, that is if you have visited a writing job site to respond to an advertised writing job opportunity, some advertisers state that they would pay only by PayPal.

And when you hurry to PayPal website to sign up to be able to receive your money if you eventually get the writing job, you will be disappointed to see that Nigeria is not one of the countries PayPay is doing business with. And that means you cannot apply to such writing opportunity because you will not be able to receive your payment.

This can be painful especially when the writing job offers such a big pay and you feel as a writer it is a piece of cake. However, I want to let you know there is no point to hit your head on the wall for that. Please notice that on the Internet there is no particular fixed method of payment.

If one writing job advertiser says they cannot pay by any other means except PayPal it means that is the only convenient means to them. So, if you cannot own a PayPay account [there are ways you can own a PayPal account anyway, which you will find below] simply disregard such advert and look for another.

You will find other people looking for writers who wouldn’t mind paying by other means. These writing job givers understand that there are excellent writers from other countries that may not have a PayPal account who can do the job at lower fee than American writers would charge.

In fact, all you have to do is to convince them in your cover letter that you are an excellent writer and they would go to any length to pay you through any means that is convenient to you. Just be open to them and tell them you cannot receive payment by PayPal.

Now, what then is or are the means through which you can receive payment for your writing service? you may ask.

You can receive money through Moneygram, Western Union or Bank wire transfer.

For both Moneygram and Western Union you don’t need to have a bank account to be able to collect your money. Although Moneygram is cheaper to use, that is, the sender pays lower charges in sending you the money, the two are reliable, you can pick up your payment in 24 hours after your job giver has sent the money – I presently use Moneygram.

With bank wiring method of receiving your payment for your writing service, you would need to have a domiciliary account. Your client pays directly into the account and in three working days it will be reflected in your account. If you prefer this method contact your local bank for their requirements for opening it – banks have different requirements.

Now we will see how you can still be able to work for those webmasters needing writers but can pay only by PayPal. Like I said before, PayPal for now does not offer their service to Nigeria.

That means you can neither sign up with them from Nigeria nor be able to cash money from a PayPal account in Nigeria. However, if you must own a PayPal account you will have to use indirect means that are legal. These are:

1. You can ask someone in a country approved by PayPay, such as the US to open one for you. You can later change the password here. But after owning the account, how would you be able to cash your money from it?

That’s a question you must answer to make your owning a PayPal account sensible. The only way would be to have a US account (or a bank account in a country approved by PayPal).

2. If you cannot open a US account and you desire to use the services of PayPal, then you may have to ask someone you know and trust very well in a country approved by PayPal, such as the US, to open a PayPal account in his/her name and forward the ID to you to use.

This person must also have a bank account (e.g. US bank account). The idea is that the person helps you to collect your money using his/her PayPal account and then forward it to you.

Remember I said the person must be someone you really trust otherwise they can pocket it.

3. Another way is to use the services of some Nigerian online businesses that help people, including writers receive money through PayPal. They remove their commission from it and pay you the balance in Naira.

The one I can recommend to you if you are interested in using this means is gtn-ng.com. I am not paid to recommend them, but am doing so for the fact that I have a friend who told me he has been collecting money online from PayPal through them for three years now.

Those are the ways by which you can open or use a PayPal account to receive payment for your writing service.

The bottom line in this article is that in spite of the challenges writers from Nigeria face in terms of receiving payment for their writing service, they can still be part of the huge writing job opportunity on the Internet and many are already benefiting from it. You can also join them. Be positive!

Best regards!

I love this site. I think it’s great. Now the big question is this: how can we get around Paypal?

How about http://www.2checkout.com. I heard it’s also good. Though I have not tried it myself.

    Thanks,

    Emma.

I appreciate your information on the above subject but I want you help me in this situation I am presently facing. It is about the emloyer asking for samples of job you have done before. And I don’t have any samples to give, what should I do in this regard.

Innocent Ibhaluobe: you can choose a topic for yourself (preferrably around the area your target employer is interested in), research and write a short article on it – that becomes your sample work.

Thanks for visiting my site, and congratulation on your PHD programme.

As for the information you are asking for, I’m sorry I haven’t done any
research about the use of the Internet by upper class Nigerian women, so I
wouldn’t be able to help you with it.

However, if I may advise on how you can get the data you need, and write
an excellent project, here is how to go about it:

    1. Prepare a questionaire containing relevant fields to your subject.

    2. Identify certain places where you can get upperclass women, go there
and get them to fill and return it. You should vary their professions.
That is, Medical Practitioners, Bankers, Oil workers, Journalists,
    Telecoms, etc.

    3. collate your findings and prepare the project.

    I hope this helps.

But if you want me to do it for you, let me know.

    Hello Innocent In,

I found this site very useful. I am from Pakistan and have the same problem that in Paypal, Pakistan name is not there.

Can you tell me some of the authentic academic websites you have worked with as now days i am applying on different sites, but dont know that if I work with them, they will pay or not.

    Thanks,
    Naush.

  13. Innocent on August 14th, 2009

Thanks Naush for visiting my blog.

I’m more into writing articles and web contents.

However, I will advise that when you get a job from any of them, complete a few of it, or do the minimum upon which payment can be made, and ask for your payment.

If they are dubious, and didn’t send your payment then you woudn’t have lost much. But if they paid, you can increase your job load.

You have to try them out somehow, though there may be scamers among them, you could also find many that are honest.

    Hello Innocent

    Thanks for your reply.

Hi, i am new in the writing business,i have just finished writing my first book,it is about to be published. All i want to know is (1).How can i avoid being tricked by the publisher who wants to publish it?(2).please kindly forward to my e-mail box websites of those companies offering writing jobs.

  16. Innocent on September 7th, 2009

Ask for a written contract from the publisher. Actually, any genuine publisher will give a contract, stating their terms, which the author can either accept or decline.

You can also check on the authors the publishers have handled before and find out from them if they are satisfied with the publisher.

  20. okosun samuel on December 27th, 2009

hello please i have been searching for writing jobs online and when i see any they always ask for paypal acoount

  21. Innocent on December 28th, 2009

There are those who will be prepared to pay you by whatever means that is convenient to you, such as MoneyGram, Western Union or direct bank transfer.

Also, you can let your prospective client know you cannot receive payment by PayPal, but would prefer other means. You need to let them know this because many, if not all job givers, assume PayPal is popular the world over, and is free to sign up for, and so anyone should have an account with them.

thank you very much for this information, it really came in handy. I’ve been looking for good online writing jobs but i’ve never gotten anyone that is willing to pay in any other form but paypal. But now that you’ve mentioned that some actually do pay via moneygram( emphasis on the mode of payment), can you give me some of these websites, please.
And thanks for the article. You are such a life saver

  24. femi Adedeji on December 22nd, 2010

I am impressed, you are one of the few Nigerians that are honest with their write up. not those asking you to pay money before you get any information and at the end, the information they give you is trash.
please keep this up and God bless you

There are 2 questions that borders me dear Innocent. 1. Is there any way a prospective client can conviniently transfer money from his paypal account to other payment solutions like 2checkout, liberty reserve, ebay, etc. If it is possible Nigerians can open account with these alternatives and get their payments. 2. Should i post my article to my client via email, and he refuses to comply with his payment, what do i do. Thank you awfully

  28. Innocent on July 18th, 2011

To be able to transfer money from PayPal, you will need to have a foreign bank account that verifies the PayPal account. You will be able to move money from the PayPal account to the bank account, and from there to any other accounts.

To be sure your client is not fraudulent, when starting with them, you can sent a limited number of articles like five or ten and ask for payment. Let them know you are doing this to guide against becoming a victim of scammers on the Internet. They will understand and see you as professional.

  30. john on October 11th, 2011

Thank you so much for your advice and I must confess to you that I am already trying it already. I got this information on the internet some days back via sun newspaper, I must say is not an easy task. I have a domiciliary account and i was told I can’t receive money from the account but I can only save, thinking it would have been a means for receiving my wage. Thanks and I hope you advice on this.. John

  31. Innocent on October 11th, 2011

You can receive foreign payments by way of wire transfer and cheques with domiciliary accounts. Domiciliary accounts are foreign accounts met to receive international payments, so you need to ask your bank which account they opened for you.

  32. Felix on November 15th, 2011

Could you give examples of sites or how to get clients who would pay you without paypal? I’m not sure many would want to pay by western union so any experience would be helpful

  33. Innocent on November 15th, 2011

There are people who will pay you in through MoneyGram or Western Union – I receive payments through MoneyGram. What you have to do is to let them know PayPal doesn’t service your country at the moment. If they are satisfied that you will give them good work, they wouldn’t mind paying you by other means than PayPal.

You will find clients who will pay you through Western Union or MoneyGram on the websites that I listed in my manual: 3 Guaranteed Streams of Income Writing Articles Online where you can find writing jobs.

Hello Innocent, Please I want to know about the genuiness of thie freelance data entry job, I applied for a project and I have started working but my earnings are little, although I wont mind becos you mentioned it in your article, but i want to know is this for real? so that I can know that am not wasting my time on the internet. Thank you

  36. Innocent on November 18th, 2011

Data entry jobs usually come out to be scam. You will not be able to reach the threshold for payment and so will never receive payment. What did they ask you to do? Is it to copy a certain text ad and paste in some free classified advert sites, and that when people click on it you will make money? That’s their popular method. Did they collect money from you to sign up? I will advice you stop it because from my experience it’s all scam.

I write too, and I have had my works published in a few foreign journals. When I write I re-read my texts many times to check for blunders. One thing with writing is, it doesn’t always take being an English professor to write. But your work can easily turn off publishers if they have too many annoying grammatical errors. I clearly see that you need to work on your spelling and grammar. All the best.

  47. tosdam on March 29th, 2013

it a pleasure visiting this helpful site, please admin how do i get a better online writing jobs. I write a lot, have written so many article, poem, and currently working on my 3rd story though others have not been produce. how do i get my articles known to newspaper for publication.

As regards writing for newspaper, you can approach editors of newspapers and discuss with them the prospect of contributing to their Papers. Their contact details are usually published at the back of most Papers. You can also visit their websites to make contact with them. If you still cannot get their contacts through the above means, you can visit their office.

A way through which you can make money as a writer online is to set up a blog and later monetize it when you start getting traffic. You can start with a free blog by signing up with blogger.com.
