How Freelance Writers in Nigeria can Receive Payment for Their Writing Service Online

Today I will be addressing the big issue of how freelance writers from Nigeria can receive payment for their writing service from their online clients.

First of all I like to say thank you to those of you who have left comments on this blog. Really it is from your comments that I can know which area to shine light on more to be able to realize the mission of setting up the blog – Online Writing Opportunities.com which is to help Nigerian freelance writers to be part of the huge money making opportunity for writers on the Internet.

As you may have found out, that is if you have visited a writing job site to respond to an advertised writing job opportunity, some advertisers state that they would pay only by PayPal.

And when you hurry to PayPal website to sign up to be able to receive your money if you eventually get the writing job, you will be disappointed to see that Nigeria is not one of the countries PayPay is doing business with. And that means you cannot apply to such writing opportunity because you will not be able to receive your payment.

This can be painful especially when the writing job offers such a big pay and you feel as a writer it is a piece of cake. However, I want to let you know there is no point to hit your head on the wall for that. Please notice that on the Internet there is no particular fixed method of payment.

If one writing job advertiser says they cannot pay by any other means except PayPal it means that is the only convenient means to them. So, if you cannot own a PayPay account [there are ways you can own a PayPal account anyway, which you will find below] simply disregard such advert and look for another.

You will find other people looking for writers who wouldn’t mind paying by other means. These writing job givers understand that there are excellent writers from other countries that may not have a PayPal account who can do the job at lower fee than American writers would charge.

In fact, all you have to do is to convince them in your cover letter that you are an excellent writer and they would go to any length to pay you through any means that is convenient to you. Just be open to them and tell them you cannot receive payment by PayPal.

Now, what then is or are the means through which you can receive payment for your writing service? you may ask.

You can receive money through Moneygram, Western Union or Bank wire transfer.

For both Moneygram and Western Union you don’t need to have a bank account to be able to collect your money. Although Moneygram is cheaper to use, that is, the sender pays lower charges in sending you the money, the two are reliable, you can pick up your payment in 24 hours after your job giver has sent the money – I presently use Moneygram.

With bank wiring method of receiving your payment for your writing service, you would need to have a domiciliary account. Your client pays directly into the account and in three working days it will be reflected in your account. If you prefer this method contact your local bank for their requirements for opening it – banks have different requirements.

Now we will see how you can still be able to work for those webmasters needing writers but can pay only by PayPal. Like I said before, PayPal for now does not offer their service to Nigeria.

That means you can neither sign up with them from Nigeria nor be able to cash money from a PayPal account in Nigeria. However, if you must own a PayPal account you will have to use indirect means that are legal. These are:

1. You can ask someone in a country approved by PayPay, such as the US to open one for you. You can later change the password here. But after owning the account, how would you be able to cash your money from it?

That’s a question you must answer to make your owning a PayPal account sensible. The only way would be to have a US account (or a bank account in a country approved by PayPal).

2. If you cannot open a US account and you desire to use the services of PayPal, then you may have to ask someone you know and trust very well in a country approved by PayPal, such as the US, to open a PayPal account in his/her name and forward the ID to you to use.

This person must also have a bank account (e.g. US bank account). The idea is that the person helps you to collect your money using his/her PayPal account and then forward it to you.

Remember I said the person must be someone you really trust otherwise they can pocket it.

3. Another way is to use the services of some Nigerian online businesses that help people, including writers receive money through PayPal. They remove their commission from it and pay you the balance in Naira.

The one I can recommend to you if you are interested in using this means is gtn-ng.com. I am not paid to recommend them, but am doing so for the fact that I have a friend who told me he has been collecting money online from PayPal through them for three years now.

Those are the ways by which you can open or use a PayPal account to receive payment for your writing service.

The bottom line in this article is that in spite of the challenges writers from Nigeria face in terms of receiving payment for their writing service, they can still be part of the huge writing job opportunity on the Internet and many are already benefiting from it. You can also join them. Be positive!

Best regards!
